Air conditioning units are essential for maintaining comfort during hot weather, but they can sometimes experience cooling problems. Before calling a professional, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve these issues yourself. By doing so, you may save both time and money.

First, check the thermostat settings. Ensure that it is set to “cool” mode and that the temperature is set lower than the current room temperature. It’s surprising how often this simple oversight can cause concern. If your thermostat uses batteries, consider replacing them as well, since low battery power might affect its functionality.

Next, inspect the air filter in your AC unit. A clogged or dirty filter can significantly reduce airflow and impede cooling efficiency. Filters should be checked monthly and replaced every one to three months depending on usage and environmental factors like pet hair or pollen levels.

After examining the filter, turn your attention to the outdoor condenser unit. Over time, dirt, leaves, and other debris can accumulate around it which hinders performance by restricting airflow. Make sure there’s at least two feet of clear space around the unit by trimming back any nearby plants or shrubs.

While outside, also examine the condenser coils for dirt build-up; if they appear dirty or dusty use a garden hose with gentle pressure (after turning off power) to clean them carefully without bending fins out of shape.

Inside your home check here all vents throughout each room making sure they’re open unblocked by furniture rugs curtains etc.
